A comprehensive guide to help you understand your child’s development and behavior through the EYFS areas.
Proud Member of Early Years Alliance
Family Corner, the Early Years Alliance's family arm, offers a wide range of exciting sessions for parents and carers who would like to learn more about supporting their children's learning.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is simply the set of rules and guidance that all nurseries and early years settings in England must follow to make sure your child is:
- Safe
- Well cared for
- Learning and developing properly
It’s set by the Department for Education and checked by Ofsted.
Your child will learn through play
Children aren’t sitting at desks. Instead, they learn through:
- Playing
- Exploring
- Talking
- Being curious
For example:
- Counting blocks → early maths
- Story time → language skills
- Role play → social skills
These cover everything your child needs before school:
- Talking and understanding
- Moving and physical skills
- Confidence and friendships
- Reading and early writing
- Numbers and problem solving
- Learning about the world
- Creativity (art, music, imagination)
- You won’t see this as “lessons”—it’s built into everyday activities.
- Around age 2 → a short progress check
- At age 5 → a final assessment before school
But more importantly, Miss B’s Nursery will:
- Share observations
- Talk to you regularly
- Involve you in your child’s development
- Every child develops at a different pace.
The EYFS makes sure:
- Activities are adapted to your child
- Staff support their interests
- They build confidence in their own way
A nursery following EYFS properly will:
- Keep your child safe and happy
- Help them build confidence and independence
- Support speech, social skills, and learning
- Communicate clearly with you
- Prepare them for school without pressure
The guide also provides advice specific to Respiratory Infection situations, including top parenting tips, managing anxiety, and helping children develop positive personal hygiene routines to protect them from viruses.
Your child isn’t “just being looked after” — they are being carefully supported to grow, learn, and be ready for school, in a safe and structured environment.
